Aussies to contest NZ title

Four Australian sidecar pairings are heading to New Zealand for a shot at this seasons Nationals at Palmerston North Speedway on the 2nd & 3rd of January 2009. Speedway New Zealand has granted dispensation for the teams to be able to compete in the championship after 3 meetings instead of the regulation 5 meetings for an overseas competitor. This will most likely see the teams take advantage of the DHL speedweek dates around the central North Island betwwen Christmas and New Year’s prior to the New Zealand Championship.

Leading the Aussie charge will be the Townsville based pairings of Gary Moon/ Mick Ing and Scott Christopher/ Trent Koppe. Moon last raced in New Zealand 17 years ago when he headed the Australian side in a test series against NZ, setting a number of track records in the process. The former Australian champ is still regularly on the podium in Australia’s big meetings and finished 2nd in last years FIM Gold Trophy. Christopher & Koppe were Australian Champs in 2005 and won the FIM Gold Trophy at the Isle of Wight the following year. The 28 year-olds come to NZ having won nearly everything on offer both in Australia as well as on the International stage.

Also down to compete in Palmerston North is the up & coming pairing of Josh Sinnott/ Hamish Golding who have scored a number of podium finishes among the big names in recent seasons. Completing the four is Rob Patterson & John van Eerde.

Also hoping to contest the title are current Australian & World No1’s Darrin Treloar & Justin Plaisted. However Treloar’s New South Wales workshop was recently gutted by fire resulting in the loss of all his gear bar what was returning from the last Gold Trophy in England. But fingers crossed, there is still a chance we may see him back in NZ.
