South Australia’s Sidecar riders are on top of the World – literally, after almost making a clean sweep of the major placings in the FIM Track Racing Sidecar Gold Trophy 1000cc at Wayville last night.

Three South Australian teams qualified for the meeting, via the Australian Championship back in April – Ron Parker/Shane Rudloff, Mark Plaisted/Sam Harrison and Mick Headland/Paul Waters.

Headland initially only qualified as first reserve but Australia was allocated an additional starter and Headland grabbed the chance with both hands, and showed the strength-in-depth of Australian Sidecar racing compared to the rest of the World, by winning last night’s event.

Headland/Waters and Townsville’s Gary Moon/Duane Dennis tied on 13 points each from their five heat rides, but then Headland repeated his heat two win over Moon in a run-off.

Headland’s only dropped points were to his two fellow South Australians, Ron Parker and Mark Plaisted, the Gillman Speedway track champions and runners-up respectively.

Plaisted/Harrison finished third overall with four wins (12 points) and an exclusion for jumping the start in their second ride, while Parker/Rudloff finished fourth overall on 9 points after a countback from Englishmen Matt Tyrrell/Shaun Yates.

Defending Gold trophy champions Scott Christopher/Trent Koppe and current Australian Champions Darrin Treloar/Justin Plaisted were the next highest scorers on 8 points each.
