Auction Raises $7000 To Help Injured Ben
Efforts to raise money for injured sidecar swinger Ben McLean have been fruitful.
The Gisborne community came together for a successful auction on Friday night.
The auction at Smash Palace raised $7000 for Ben and his wife Holly, who has moved to Christchurch to be with her husband. Ben and Holly listened to some of the auction take place on the phone from Christchurch.
Smash Palace owner Gus Heuser said the auction was a success and the night was “fantastic”. “It was beyond our expectations” he said. the result was about 75 items being donated by local buisness ranging from an MP3 player, pharmacy gift packs, a petrol leaf blower and even three carpenters for a day (thanks Shane & Aaron McNaught) – which sold for nearly $500 (well done Stubbs).
It was a really big crowd of people who were all happy to get their wallets out. they just got into the spirit of it and were very generouse – one guy brought one of our bar tabs, then put it back into the auction, so we sold it twice,” said Gus Heuser.
Auctioneer Peter McGrannachan kept the bidding flowing as each item was up for grabs. “everyone had a bit of fun. the atmosphere was really great. Peter just kept things pumping and sold everything, even his assistant (Skinny Hughes) for $50 to a lucky lady …. I dont know what would get with that,”
The money raised will be passed on to the Ben and Holly to help with Bens recovery. It was pleasing to see the Gisborne speedway president, vice president and secratery all there supporting the event. the efforts of the speedway community, family, freinds and Smash palace regulars was some thing that Gus Heuser said was priceless it was difficult to measure the gratatude felt.
A huge thanks go to Gus Heuser (Smash Palace) Brett Lloyd (Stockcar racer) for arranging this event.
