Auction to raise funds for injured swinger
Speedway might sometimes break the bones of those who race, but not the spirit of a sporting community uniting to aid one of their own.
Gisborne racing enthusiasts have come together to take part in an auction on Friday.
Many businesses have donated goods in an effort to raise money for injured sidechair swinger Ben McLean.
Mr McLean, 23, suffered serious neck and chest injuries after coming off his sidechair while racing at Meeanee Speedway in Napier earlier this month. His stay in Burwood Hospital is expected to last five to six months.
Recovery is slow and there is a chance he might never walk again. However, Ben has already regained the use of his right arm and was expected to try out a wheelchair this week. The accident was felt throughout the speedway racing community and the support has been huge.
Stockcar driver Brett Lloyd has been a driving force behind the auction. He has approached numerous businesses this week asking for any goods to help raise money for Mr McLean and his wife Holly, who left her job to be at her husband’s bedside in Christchurch.”The town has been really helpful, really keen to do whatever it takes,” he said.
The couple also had to put their house plans on hold because of the accident. The appeal to help out friends in need has been a speedy process. In only a few days, Mr Lloyd gathered more than $2000-worth of donated goods alone, and that was only the first truckload, he said.
“There has been that much response. It is going to be a big night,” he said.
The auction will be at Smash Palace at 7pm.
Owner Gus Heuser said the gesture of goodwill was just an example of the racing community’s nature.
“Sometimes if someone has got a problem with their bike or anything, other teams will lend them stuff — even if they are racing against them. There’s no animosity or anything like that. I’ve seen someone lend a whole bike.
“I guess that sort of thing just carries on
. . . it’s the whole speedway community,” he said.
Even meat for the camp oven roast meal to be served on the night was donated by a local business. Gisborne auctioneer Peter McGrannachan will host the auction.
The speedway community is exceptionally grateful for the support generated by the businesses involved. Donated goods are mostly top-of-the-line ranging from a massive tool set, oil skin jacket to car stereos, MP3 players and alcohol . . . “real tradesmen stuff”.
Anyone wanting to help raise funds for Mr and Mrs McLean are welcome at Smash Palace from 7pm on Friday.
