Efforts to raise money for injured sidecar swinger Ben McLean have been fruitful.
The Gisborne community came together for a successful auction on Friday night.
The auction at Smash Palace raised $7000 for Ben and his wife Holly, who has moved to Christchurch to be with her husband. Ben and Holly listened to some of the auction take place on the phone from Christchurch.
Smash Palace owner Gus Heuser said the auction was a success and the night was “fantastic”. “It was beyond our expectations” he said. the result was about 75 items being donated by local buisness ranging from an MP3 player, pharmacy gift packs, a petrol leaf blower and even three carpenters for a day (thanks Shane & Aaron McNaught) – which sold for nearly $500 (well done Stubbs). Auction to raise funds for injured swinger
Speedway might sometimes break the bones of those who race, but not the spirit of a sporting community uniting to aid one of their own.
Gisborne racing enthusiasts have come together to take part in an auction on Friday.
Many businesses have donated goods in an effort to raise money for injured sidechair swinger Ben McLean.
Mr McLean, 23, suffered serious neck and chest injuries after coming off his sidechair while racing at Meeanee Speedway in Napier earlier this month.His stay in Burwood Hospital is expected to last five to six months.

This Sunday (April 29th) the Auckland Sidecar Champs, incorporating the 3rd running of the Karl Barritt Memorial Trophy, hit Rosebank Speedway.
The Championship will be contested by a quality 20 bike field. Included in the field are defending champions Nick Edmonds & Paul James (37a), last years runners-up Russell Stuart & Andy Parker (46b), and the 3rd placed pairing of Kevin Moohan & Glen Bagshaw (0a) fresh from their win in the Bill Buckley Grand Prix last meeting.
